What is the EMPower Breastfeeding initiative?

EMPower Breastfeeding is a hospital-based quality improvement initiative focused on enhancing maternity practices, leading to Baby-Friendly Hospital designation by BFUSA©. The EMPower Team, led by Abt Associates, includes the Carolina Global Breastfeeding Institute and Center for Public Health Quality with guidance from Baby-Friendly USA. The principal foundation for this initiative is to empower families and health care providers to promote improved quality in the provision of optimal maternity care resulting in increased breastfeeding success.

This initiative is funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Obesity (DNPAO). DNPAO is committed to increasing breastfeeding rates throughout the United States and to promoting and supporting optimal breastfeeding practices toward the ultimate goal of improving the public’s health.

What are the benefits of participating in this initiative?

The EMPower Team is seeking hospitals interested in actively participating in this project. Selected hospitals will receive technical assistance from trained breastfeeding and quality improvement coaches. Coaching will be carried out in a systematic but tailored manner, meeting the unique needs of each hospital.
