During this webinar, North Carolina public health experts will provide new information on three important topics:
1. Launch of NC’s new electronic birth registration system: On January 1, 2024, the North Carolina Office of Vital Records will go live statewide with a new Electronic Birth Registration System (EBRS). The new EBRS will provide a faster, more secure, web-based birth registration application.
2. Stemming the tide of congenital syphilis: From 2012 to 2022, there was a 547% increase in reported syphilis cases in North Carolina among women with an associated increase in congenital syphilis infections, from 1 case in 2012 to 57 cases in 2022. There have been five stillborn and neonatal deaths so far in 2023. This increase mirrors the national trend as described by the Centers for Disease Control. Experts will review legal requirements for screening and describe new data and tools to prevent transmission.
3. Providing RSV vaccination during pregnancy: On September 22, 2023, CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommended RSV vaccine for pregnant persons at 32–36 weeks’ gestation to protect infants. Experts will provide information about accessing vaccine, billing, and overcoming barriers to administration.
