Practicing teamwork to improve patient outcomes

Conducting simulation drills of obstetric hemorrhage scenarios is a vital piece of improving identification and management of obstetric hemorrhage.  While a majority of the same providers work on a given unit, the team that comes together in the moment to care for a patient experiencing a postpartum hemorrhage is unique each time.  Practicing clinical skills and teamwork among all staff involved is crucial to improving patient outcomes.  The team at First Health Moore Regional have been successful in executing postpartum hemorrhage simulation drills that are provider led and involve all obstetric staff members.  They have used the opportunity to both practice teamwork between provider and nurses, as well as among nursing staff, and improve the clinical skills and knowledge of the staff in attendance.  The effort expended in organizing and executing these simulation drills has been a factor in the outstanding patient outcomes for women delivering at Moore Regional.
