This month NCCC teams agreed on a revised Action Plan for increasing the use of exclusive human milk. Building on the successes of Phase I teams will be focusing on just a few areas in Phase II that they have determined will yield significant gains...

January 17, 2012

This month NCCC teams finalized the new data collection form to track progress in increasing the use of exclusive human milk. Teams narrowed the focus of data collection to enable data collection on all infants for the full 28 days to get an improved picture of practice and increase the 'spread' of practice improvements.  The teams will meet again in January via webinar to finalize the Action Plan for Phase II.

November 11, 2011

This month North Carolina hospital teams were brought together in one room to determine new data collection parameters and begin work on formulating a new action plan for increasing the use of exclusive human milk. Teams functioned as the state’s expert panel by using their knowledge and experiences to pinpoint specific areas for both process and practice improvements.  The teams will meet again this month via webinar and will continue to be heavily involved in setting the direction of Phase II.

November 11, 2011

As teams across North Carolina continue to work collaboratively we are seeing steady gains across many of the components of our action plan.  We are looking forward to highlighting those gains at November's Learning Session in Raleigh.  The first half of the day will be spent reviewing (and celebrating) our progress to date (check back in November to see the slides at the 'NCCC Track LS3' link), sharing what worked, and learning from one another.  The second half of the day will be devoted to formulating a revised action plan and determining the data collection required to support the action plan as we roll out Phase II.

Action steps highlighted

Brochure Feedback:
•    Change logo from NICU to March of Dimes (LM will send Keith logo)
•    This content has been adapted from March of Dimes NICU Family Support® materials by the Perinatal Quality Collaborative of North Carolina in collaboration with the March of Dimes Foundation (So sorry this is so long! ?)
•    Include PQCNC logo
•    Capitalize the 2nd “S” of Skin to Skin in the title
•    Picture: find a picture showing the baby’s face and mom’s face. Mom appears asleep.
•    Include “Kangaroo Care” terminology once in the brochure
•    Move “reading”, “singing”, “telling” to a new section under the header: “Stay close to me as I grow by:”

Power Point Feedback:
•    Slide 1 Title: “Kangaroo Care: The Power of Skin to Skin)
•    Slide 2: Resolution is low (LM will send a better slide)
•    Slide 10: Baby isn’t covered – should the image be consistent with the message of positioning and warmth? The group will be looking for additional BF photos to use
•    Do we want full text from the narration to be included as copy on the slide – in particular for the hearing impaired parent? If so, it will compromise the size and number of photos we can use per slide
•    A question came up regarding how other sites will be using this tool – Mission has graciously offered to create a video in addition to a power point slide set. The PP can be customized by site, the video can be used, but once it’s created cannot be altered.
•    A final slide needs to be added to the power point slide set to identify the contributors (hospitals) to the project – Mission, please add a new slide.

Next steps:
•    Next call-in meeting: 11/17 @ 2:00
•    Between now and 11/17 members will be using the website to communicate updates on the brochure and power point slide set.
•    FYI: Laura will be out of town 10/12-10/28

October 4, 2011

Robin Deal with Rex in Raleigh: idea to convert PP to a brochure – her hospital’s graphic arts department can help develop a patient brochure

Mary Ellen @ Mission is PP proficient and will work on rewriting the content and including narration within the slide set.

•    Slide 1: Subtext is too high level – Kangaroo Care first, then skin-to-skin
    “KC: the power of S2S”
•    Slide 2: Needs to remain
•    Slide 3: (QUOTE) Comment section needs to be changed. Needs to be more self-directed, either a narrated PP or all text should be incorporated onto each picture. Add a quote on this slide. Add definition
•    Slide 4: (DEFINE) Give definition of S2S. The toes look stressed. All photos should be KC!
•    Slide 5: Benefits to Baby
•    Slide 6: Benefits to You
•    Slide 7: Safety
•    Slide 8: Feeding “Stay close to me while feeding me”
•    Slide 9: S2S is for all moms. Narration include a parent quote
•    Slide 10: Stay close to my whole family… take out the extra “my”
•    Slide 11: Stay close to your loved ones. Montage of photos i.e. health care provider, grandparents, sibs, friends, partner…
•    Slide 12: Let us help you

Next Nursery Call: 10/6/11 @ 2 PM EST
