PQCNC has been asked by the March of Dimes (MOD) if the PQCNC EHM groups would be willing to include a new MOD program in the effort to increase exclusive human milk rates in NICUs.  The MOD module called "Close To Me" is designed to promote and support kangaroo care.  The initial version of this module is designed with NICU infants in mind but MOD would like to modify this module (with PQCNC's assistance) for use in promoting skin to skin care in all newborns. There are presentations geared to families and providers.  In addition to supplying us with the actual powerpoints, March of Dimes is willing to donate fliers and Close To Me Buttons to promote skin to skin efforts.

There was significant interest expressed by all centers attending the initial webinar in implementing the Close to Me program. A training webinar providing guidance in implementing the program was held this month and PQCNC and MOD are in the midst of coordinating the logistics of moving forward...

This team has decided to focus on the family education  component, and try to adapt the March of Dimes Close to Me (CTM) parent education from a NICU audience to a nursery audience. Most agreed a 5 – 7 minute DVD that could be made available to parents at prenatal visits, while in L & D, or from the hospital website would be optimal, but it appears to be cost-prohibitive.

We divided the group into subcommittees:

1.    Content: send all skin-to-skin (S2S) materials, resources, parent education, policy/protocol, safety education, bibliography & articles (specific to the nursery population) to Mission
2.    Photographs: send all photos to Keith. Keith will post onto the website. Looking for image-diversity: racial, age, gender. A diverse setting is also good: some close ups of mom/dad and baby, but also some images where siblings are in the background, or grandparents are nearby.
3.    Testimonials: send family quotes to Dana Sandford

Key thoughts:

•    There needs to be an increased focus on the connection between S2S and breastfeeding – evidenced through pictures and research
•    Content material needs to include the immediate post-partum S2S opportunities for dad
•    The emphasis is on breast feeding, but not to exclude or alienate the bottle feeding parent

Action steps:

•    Laura Miller will look into grant money that may be possible through the March of Dimes, North Carolina chapter.
•    Greta has a grant proposal in the works currently, and will see if any of that funding could be directed toward this project.
•    Laura will give an update at the 7/27 Well baby Webinar

PQCNC has been asked by the March of Dimes (MOD) if the PQCNC EHM groups would be willing to include a new MOD program in the effort to increase eclusive human milk rates in NICUs and nurseries.  The MOD module called "Close To Me" is designed to promote and support kangaroo care.  The initial version of this module is designed with NICU infants in mind but MOD would like to modify this module for use in promoting skin to skin care in all newborns. There are presentations geared to families and providers.  In addition to supplying us with the actual powerpoints, March of Dimes is willing to donate fliers and Close To Me Buttons to promote skin to skin efforts.  Laura Miller, the March of Dimes National Coordinator for Close to Me and Manager of Licensing for the Family Support Program presented an overview of Close To Me. She made an appeal for the EHM Nursery Collaborative members to consider assisting in the transformation of Close to Me to a tool that would be useful with well newborns and their families.

There was significant interest expressed by all centers attending the initial webinar in participating in developing a Nursery version of Close to Me. The meeting closed with a general agreement that the EHM Nursery Collaborative would identify a small group of advisers interested in working with Laura to create such a product. PQCNC will identify this group by next week in order that the group could begin discussions and report back to the larger Collaborative on 7/27, the date of the next EHM Well Baby webinar.

Once it is developed the larger PQCNC EHM Nursery Collaborative offers multiple unique laboratories in which to determine how Close To Me might be incorporated into couplet and well nursery care.
